Taiwan stocks fell 0.3 percent on Friday, with Formosa Petrochemical, , Taiwan's only private-run oil refinery, recovering to close flat after a fire at a Taiwan plant forced the shutdown of some facilities. DRAM maker ProMos plunged 6.12 percent after Elpida Memory said it would not inject capital to the Taiwanese company, which has been struggling due to a supply glut and steep price cuts in the industry.
Plastics shares were off 0.99 percent. Formosa had fallen over 2 percent in early trading after the fire that broke out Thursday night. "The fire will affect the company's earnings. To what extent? Investors are still watching," said Chu Yen-ming, a vice president of KGI Securities. The main TAIEX index slipped 27.07 points to 9,006.61. It was expected to trade in a tight range next week.
