International Fire Fighter Day was observed on Wednesday to honour and support fire-fighters who risk their lives everyday to help their communities. Different rescue service providers organised functions to highlight the importance of the day. Speakers in functions have called for further improvement in fire fighting facilities in the country, apart from raising awareness among the masses regarding fire safety measures.
The Punjab Emergency Service (Rescue 1122) celebrated the day by organising functions. They also said that number of incidents related to fire in Pakistan is on the rise due to various factors including non-compliance of safety measures. Building safety codes are also not being followed in letter and spirit while majority of buildings lack proper fire fighting arrangements, emergency exits, firefighting equipment, which has increased their vulnerabilities, they added.
It may be recalled that the International Fire-fighters' Day is observed on May 4 every year since 1999 to remember those fire-fighters who sacrificed their lives in the line of duty. It may be noted that in today's environment, fire fighting has become even more dangerous due to a number of reasons. One of the reasons is that many things are made of plastic, when burnt they become toxic. Fire fighters breathe in and it leads to their deaths.
According to the Punjab Emergency Service (Rescue 1122) Director General Dr Rizwan Naseer, the objective of celebrating the day was to pay homage to the fire-fighters and to educate people about fire safety and create awareness regarding the efforts being made by the fire-fighters for public's safety.
