Bang-ladesh's top mobile phone operator Grameenphone has earned overall revenue worth more than $283 million in the first quarter of 2011, up 21.3 percent from the same period of last year, a company statement said on Monday. "The growth was mainly from voice, data and interconnection traffic driven by 33.8 percent growth in subscription base as well as revenues from sale of mobile devices," it said.
Grameenphone is 55.8 percent-owned by Norwegian group Telenor. Compared to the fourth quarter of 2010, the revenue increase was 1.09 billion taka, representing 5.5 percent growth. "I am very happy to present our shareholders a strong first quarter result where we have maintained the growth momentum in revenue and subscription base," said Tore Johnsen, chief executive officer of the Grameenphone Limited (GP).
He said that during the quarter, GP added 2.0 million subscriptions, ending with close to 32 million subscribers and serving 43.8 percent of the country's mobile market. Bangladesh's mobile sector has grown rapidly, with subscriber numbers reaching more than 68.6 million in 2010, helped by steady economic growth and fierce competition among the country's six operators.
