Wincor Nixdorf, one of the world's leading providers of IT solutions and services to retail banks and retailers, today announced that the company has reached a new milestone concerning its leading Cash/Check Deposit Modules (CCDM) technology. The company's modules that allow for the deposit of bundles of banknotes and checks at ATMs will benefit from enhanced security and greater availability which will ensure improved transaction volumes per system.
Since 2002, Wincor Nixdorf has installed nearly 40,000 CCDMs at banks making it the world's leader in systems with modules for bundle processing of banknotes and checks. "We've pooled all our experience from customer projects in 70 countries to develop an enhanced solution even more," says Mr Uwe Krause, Director of Global Marketing at Wincor Nixdorf. By optimising the mechanical processing of notes and checks, the system's developers have succeeded in reducing jam rates by up to 25 percent improving system availability.
In addition, further developments of the software ensure that counterfeit banknotes are recognised more reliably and quickly and can be removed from circulation. "The rapid optimisation carried out by our R&D team was possible because both the hardware and software are in-house developments, and are designed to work together." "The goal of the improvements is to increase the overall transaction volume on each system through higher availability, and ultimately to enhance customer satisfaction," adds Mr Krause.
Intelligent deposit systems from Wincor Nixdorf streamline the entire cash and check handling process. Cash and checks are first authenticated using state-of-the-art image processing technology. The entire posting process that follows is automated, eliminating the need for manual processing.
According to US-based analyst Tower Group, every ATM envelope deposit costs US $1.70 while every transaction at the bank teller costs US $1.40. In contrast, checks deposited in bundles via a Wincor Nixdorf CCDM system are automatically scanned, reducing the bank's costs to just US 40 cents per transaction. The Cash/Check Deposit Module is in use in countries such as Spain, Russia, and Turkey in addition to the US Currently the solution can process 40 different currencies.
PC/E Teller Operations: "Front-office processes are largely automated" PC/E Teller Operations is Wincor Nixdorf's state-of-the-art front-office software for processing both cash and non-cash transactions in bank branches. The solution has proven itself at numerous European financial institutions. Among Wincor Nixdorf's customers for this solution is Baden-Württembergische Bank (BW-Bank) - the retail bank of LBBW, the central bank of the state of Baden-Württemberg. The software has helped BW-Bank automate a wide variety of standard transaction postings in its current account, savings account, foreign currency and check business.
Retail banks are increasingly relying on their bank branches as a place for personal contact. The point of this development is to nurture the relationship between the customer and the bank - through new and innovative branch concepts and by offering the highest quality in service and consulting. Employees at the bank counter represent the initial point of contact for the customer, and thus need applications that offer on-demand support for their daily tasks.
PC/E Teller Operations impresses these users through its clear, intuitive user interface and its ease of operation. "Front office processes should largely be automated so that our staff can concentrate completely on customers," says Markus Dollmann, who is responsible for IT products at LBBW. What's more, the staff of BW-Bank appreciates the lean processes and low error incidence when managing cash holdings with PC/E Teller Operations. "Our end-of-day closing has become much easier. Incorrect postings have nearly been eliminated, and that ensures trouble-free work processes," says Dollmann.
The bank's employees praise the solution's transaction processing, which functions rapidly, simply and completely without media discontinuities or the need for other applications. The software also complies with system-side legal requirements such as those of the German money laundering legislation. Depending on the configuration, transactions, once initiated, are processed automatically, lightening the workload on the bank's employees. All processes are documented in an electronic journal that also provides search criteria for the eventuality of later research.
PC/E Teller Operations integrates special banking peripheral devices - savings book or document printers, card readers or automated teller safes, for example - from a wide variety of vendors. The integration of services such as multichannel provision of product campaigns for targeted customer address means that channel-specific implementation is no longer necessary.
Wincor Nixdorf leading in the field of cash and check deposit automation
No other company has installed more ATMs with automated deposit functionality in Western Europe than Wincor Nixdorf. This is one of the findings of a study conducted by London-based strategic research and consulting firm Retail Banking Research, which examined the deployment of automated deposit terminals (ADTs) in 46 countries world-wide, including in 14 important markets in Western Europe. According to the study, which is entitled "Deposit Automation and Recycling 2010", Wincor Nixdorf was the leading supplier of ADTs in Western Europe with a 37 percent share of installations at the end of 2009.
Automated deposit terminals enable both banknotes and checks to be deposited and processed automatically. In 2005, Wincor Nixdorf was the first company to present a system for bulk check deposits. Only two years later, the technology received an award from the Banking Technology magazine for being one of the most innovative solutions in the banking sector. Together with customers from all over the world, the solution has since been refined and improved, with the technology having been installed 10,000 times in the US alone. The solution promises great economic benefits: analysts from the Tower Group have calculated that the costs for check deposits at the counter have been reduced from 1.40 US dollars to only 40 US cents.
In addition, Wincor Nixdorf was and continues to be an innovation leader in the field of cash recycling, where deposited banknotes can be made available for dispensing after having been authenticated by the system. Well over 20,000 of these systems have been installed by Wincor Nixdorf, with 80 percent of all German banks already using this shortcut in the cash cycle.
And Wincor Nixdorf continues to advance the automation of deposit and cash processes: The recently introduced CINEO system generation enables cash processes to be completely redesigned. "The systems' innovative banknote storage concept allows cassettes from deposit systems to be used in automated teller safes, for example. Numerous other scenarios, even one that involves co-operation between banks and retailers, are also possible," says Uwe Krause, Director Global Marketing at Wincor Nixdorf. "This new system generation will enable us to enhance our market position even further, and not just in the field of deposit systems," Krause adds.
Cross-channel marketing: PC/E Suite addresses customers across all channels
kphophBank customers communicate with their institutions through a variety of different channels. And no matter which channel they choose, they expect to encounter a uniform interface and receive the same quality of service - whether in a branch, at a self-service terminal or via mobile banking. Wincor Nixdorf's PC/E Suite supports banks in implementing a coherent multichannel strategy, one that includes marketing campaigns across all delivery channels.
Visitors to Wincor World 2011 will discover exactly how cross-channel marketing works. It begins with an emotive advertising message that addresses customers from a bank's virtual display window. An integrated QR code (a two-dimensional barcode containing an encoded URL) allows users of smart phones to call up additional information on the product offers. If interested customers log into a self-service terminal, the screen displays a follow-up offer on the same topic. A response function allows customers to make a personal appointment at the branch. The consultant at the branch is informed in advance that the customer has made an appointment, can call up the necessary customer data and thus provide customised advice, using an iPad if desired. In this way, PC/E Direct Marketing creates an end-to-end process from the first customer address right through to the conclusion of a contract. And PC/E Direct Marketing controls the bank's complete campaign management across all its delivery channels. In conjunction with the bank's CRM systems, customers receive product recommendations that are tailored to their personal situations.
The software that Wincor Nixdorf offers via its Enterprise Management Solutions cluster facilitates centralised channel management and administration of all the processes in use at retail banks. For bank staff, the ability to provide service across a variety of delivery channels - whether this involves the operation of self-service terminals, security management, cash management and monitoring, or the handling of marketing campaigns - represents a whole new experience.
As an alternative to running these solutions in-house, the bank can also outsource the operation of its self-service infrastructure to Wincor Nixdorf, from the devices themselves to central software components such PC/E self-service or PC/E Direct Marketing. This enables banks to profit from Wincor Nixdorf's professional expertise in the field of IT and service management, and can free up the capacity they need to respond even faster to market changes or to drive forward innovation.
Dynamic Fraud Management solutions - intelligent recognition and prevention of fraud
Hold-ups at bank branches, hackers infiltrating networks, tampering at ATMs - with the number of threats growing, protection against fraudulent attacks is an ever bigger concern for banks. Apart from the financial damage such attacks cause, banks must contend with harm to their image - and the ensuing loss of customer confidence. Ad hoc measures are no longer enough; end-to-end security solutions are the order of the day. That is why the "ProTect - Security Solutions" stand at Wincor World will be showcasing innovative solutions for actively preventing attacks on the delivery channels and processes of banks and retailers. Aside from the new technologies that will expand the ProTect portfolio this year, the focus is on integrating the individual components already available to create a holistic security solution. "Convergence" is the buzzword here, which means combining solutions from data and software security, cash security, surveillance, identification and access control with the new elements of the Dynamic Fraud Management solution, namely the Fraud Correlation Engine and the Fraud Prevention Engine.
The number of skimming attacks recorded in Europe rose again in the first half of 2010. All in all, the incidence of fraudulent attacks on ATMs is growing at a rate of over seven percent, and the attacks are becoming more sophisticated. The goal of Dynamic Fraud Management is to actively avoid attacks rather than just wait for them to happen and then take care of the damage. At Wincor World, the company will be presenting a way of linking up different systems and the information, events and alarms they generate. Some of the components - for instance the Anti-Skimming II module, biometric solutions, Optical Security Guard and the Wincor Nixdorf banknote staining solution - will be demonstrated in real-life scenarios. With its Dynamic Fraud Management solutions, Wincor Nixdorf will show how information can be networked in an intelligent manner and the necessary action taken to protect banks' processes and systems against security threats. The focus will be on the behaviour-based recognition of attack patterns and how attacks can be successfully averted.
The ProTect portfolio comprises consulting, hardware, software and services. It has now been extended to include Dynamic Fraud Management solutions, but retains its tried-and-tested three-tier approach to protecting banks. In the first step, experts analyse a bank's threat scenario, examining in detail its business processes, information and communication structures, and working environments. On the basis of this analysis, the individual level of protection required by the bank is determined, and solution concepts for protective measures - under consideration of existing regulations and limitations - are formulated. The second step involves implementation of the tailored security solutions. Finally, in the third step, Wincor Nixdorf offers the bank the opportunity of handing over the operation of its security infrastructure to Wincor Nixdorf, and allowing it, for example, to look after the surveillance of entire branches.
Consumers are Unaware of Common ATM Security Threats
According to Wincor Nixdorf Survey

Wincor Nixdorf, one of the world's leading providers of IT solutions and services to retailers and retail banks, announced that, according to its recent survey, consumers are largely unaware of major security threats at their ATMs - but would switch banks if another institution demonstrated that it provided more secure ATMs.
The study polled the knowledge, preferences and trends around ATM security of consumers based in the United States. The survey revealed that, despite an overwhelming concern about ATM fraud, the majority of consumers are unaware of popular fraud tactics, such as ATM card skimming. Skimming causes $350,000 in monetary losses each day and is occurring five times more frequently this year than ever before, according to the Secret Service.
Additionally, the majority of consumers agreed that if another bank offered significantly more advanced ATM security, they would switch banks.
The ATM has become the primary customer touch point for many financial institutions, so it is critical that retail banks offer the most sophisticated security software to protect their customers," said David Hadesty, VP of Product Management for Wincor Nixdorf's US Banking Division. "Now, more than ever - if you are a retail bank that does not make investments in advanced ATM security, you are at risk of losing both money and customers."
