Seoul shares retreat

Published Updated

Seoul shares retreated on Tuesday after posting a fresh historical closing high in the previous session, pressured by falls in steel, chemicals and financial stocks with caution lingering ahead of a US Federal Reserve meeting this week. The Korea Composite Stock Price Index ended down 0.44 percent at 2,206.30 points. The KOSPI 200 June futures fell 0.5 points to 292.85 and the KOSPI 200 spot index dropped 1.31 points to 291.38. The junior Kosdaq market ended down 1.31 percent at 521.68.
Foreign investors picked up a net 71.9 billion won ($65.69 million) worth of stocks, buying for a fifth straight session. Automakers were mixed after recent rallies on positive earnings hopes ahead of results announcements this week, with Korean carmakers expected to benefit from production disruptions in Japan.
Shares in Hyundai Motor, South Korea's top automaker, dipped 0.41 percent, while its affiliate Kia Motors extended gains, rising 2.36 percent. Most tech shares fell, but Samsung Electronics rebounded 0.9 percent. Hynix Semiconductor slumped 4.66 percent on concerns about stock dilution after a leading shareholder said creditors-turned-shareholders would resume the long-delayed sale of the world's second-biggest memory chip maker, possibly selling new Hynix shares in a bid to give various options to a potential buyer.
