After a hot and dry weather in Punjab, wheat harvesting, both mechanical and manual is in full swing, Director General Punjab Agriculture Extension Services, Anjum Ali told Business Recorder, here on Monday. According to official sources Pakistan is expecting a bumper wheat crop of more than 24m tonnes this crop season.
The country requires about 22m tonnes per year. Dr Anjum said Punjab government's conservative estimate is that the province will produce at-least 18.2 million tons of wheat this season. He advised farmers to complete harvesting in minimum time so that the fields are free for sowing of the all-important cotton and rice crops.
Meanwhile, Met Office has said that no rain is expected in the country during next five to six days. Day temperatures have already started to increase gradually over northern areas of the country. Heat wave conditions have already onset over the southern parts of the country including Sindh and Balochistan and weather is likely to become very hot in Islamabad, Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Kashmir from Monday. The temperatures are likely to increase by 3-5 C in most parts of the country, which would be very good for wheat harvesting.
