Mukhtaran Mai case: review of Supreme Court's verdict demanded

Human rights activists on Saturday demanded the immediate review of Mukhtar Mai judgement stressing the government to provide airtight security to her. A large number of participants carrying placards, banners, posters of Mukhtar Mai, staged a stationary demonstration to support the rape victim outside Karachi Press Club.
They demanded a review of the court's verdict. They raised slogans against the judicial and the local jirga systems, saying 'shame on criminal justice system,' 'fight will continue until Mukhtar Mai is given justice,' and 'discriminate laws be abolished'. Activists of Pakistan Women's Foundation for Peace (PWFP) also took part along members of the civil society in the protest and termed Mukhtar Mai a symbol of great woman due to her endeavours during the entire ordeal.
President PWFP, Nargis Rehman criticised the local jirga system, and social role of landlords in the country, saying 'chowdhry and vadera' had terrorised the entire community. She said the government's writ seemed vanishing under the landlord domains.
She said, 'the criminal justice system should be subjected not just to review but redress,' adding police should only be held accountable to the state. She demanded of the government to strictly punish those violated the state law. She said women should be facilitated during registration of FIR at police stations and proposed an overhauling of lower judiciary of the
country, besides a large representation of women in the judiciary. She said the government should take stringent measures to eliminate the illegal jirga system in the country.
Nargis said the government should provide airtight security to Mukhtar Mai and warned the authorities that they would be held responsible if anything happened to her. She made it clear that her organisation's protest was not against the court's verdict rather against the entire system and social structure of the country which exploited the 'weak and the vulnerable'. "The Mukhtara Mai case exposes the shameful administrative and social structure that a democratic parliament is averse to changing," President PWFP said.
