The company played a crucial role following the displacement and destruction caused by the floods in the summer of 2010. engro worked closely with a number of organisations to reach out to a wide community of flood victims. The company's partner organisations included PPAF, SRSO, FDO, HANDS and the Army.
The company distributed over 2.5 million meals, 418,556 litres of milk, and 16,300 litres of water, as well as providing medical treatment for nearly 5,000 people and over 100,000 animals. In addition, the company provided other necessities, such as hand pumps, hygiene kits, shelter tents and latrines, as well as the essential shoulder of comfort through an army of volunteers galvanised by Engro's employees.
Engro has also developed a two-pronged strategy for rehabilitation, which includes rebuilding communities through a model village programme, and simultaneously rehabilitating the local economy by providing medical and nutritional care for livestock.
The model village programme (MVP), one of the largest social investments in Pakistan, will be based in Ahsanpur, Punjab and will provide up to 200 families with shelter, medical and educational facilities, basic infrastructure, vocational training and livelihood opportunities. Additionally, Engro Foundation has worked in partnership with USAID Pakistan for the rehabilitation of dairy-producing livestock in flood-affected areas of Larkana and Dadu. Named the 'Khushaal Livestock' programme, the initiative is worth Rs 77.35 million, targeting 15,000 households and over 100,000 animals over a six-month period, and aims to restore the productivity of farm animals to pre-flood levels.
