The US military handed over an alleged jihadist captured in Afghanistan to German police Thursday and he is likely to face terrorism charges, prosecutors in Karlsruhe said. Police from Hamburg, apparently the home town of the 36-year-old, took custody of him at Ramstein US Air Force Base. A statement said Ahmed Wali had dual German and Afghan citizenship.
A magistrate remanded him in German custody. His full surname was not given. He is accused of membership of the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan (IBU). The statement said he left Germany in March last year, trained with the IBU and fought against both government forces in Pakistan and Nato forces in Afghanistan. A Karlsruhe spokesman said he could not say where or when the 36-year-old had been taken prisoner.
