ISLAMABAD: Wapda suffered loss to the tune of Rs 5425.384 million while Pepco Rs 3324.436 million during the floods of 2010 and the government would construct 32 medium dams during next five years for power generation, irrigation and to minimise losses in future.
According to information given in written replies to the questions of the members of the National Assembly, the ministry of water and power is taking many steps to minimise losses in future as following: By constructing mega reservoirs: 32 Medium Dams will be constructed in four provinces of Pakistan in two phases. In Phase-I, 12 dams and in Phase-II, 20 dams will be constructed from 2010 to 2013 and 2011 to 2016 respectively. These 32 dams will control and absorb the flows coming from the rivers/streams in their respective areas.
Similarly, (i) Mangla Dam Raising Project Flood mitigation can be done by absorbing 2.9 MAF. (ii) By constructing Munda Dam on the Swat River, the mitigating of flood in Swat River will be achieved by absorbing 1.29 MAF. (iii) Kurram Tangi Dam will mitigate floodwaters of about 1.20 MAF. (iv) Diamer Basha Dam, a large dam which can absorb a huge volume of 6.4 MAF and will save downstream area up to Tarbela from any type of flood in Indus.
The ministry also informed the House that Kundiwarn Dam in Tehsil Tayarza is one of the schemes identified by Fata to be implemented under the Quick Impact Projects undertaken by the Government in South Waziristan Agency. The PC-II of the scheme has been approved at cost of Rs 75.231 million by the competent forum. Nespak/Frontier Works Organisation who are the consultant/implementing organisation are in the process of carrying out technical feasibility of the scheme. Based on the outcome of the technical feasibility, PC-I of the scheme will be prepared and work will be undertaken accordingly.
