Opposition parties in the National Assembly and Senate on Wednesday moved the Parliament against the promulgation of three ordinances by the President to impose new taxes. The major opposition party, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) submitted adjournment motion to the National Assembly Secretariat against the imposition of 15 percent flood surcharge through ordinance.
The motion has been submitted by PML-N's lawmakers including Mohammad Hanif Abbasi, Shireen Arshad, Raja Mohammad Asad Khan, Malik Shakir Awan, Rana Mehmood-ul-Hassan and Nisar Tanveer.
The motions stated that the masses would be compelled to pay Rs 53 billion on account of new taxes with the imposition of the presidential ordinance. The PML-N members moved the Lower House of the Parliament to discuss the matter of urgent public importance in its next session.
A similar adjournment motion has also been submitted to the Senate Secretariat by Jamaat-i-Islami (JI) senators including Professor Khurshid Ahmed, Professor Mohammad Ibrahim and Afia Zia against the imposition of 15 percent income tax surcharge, imposition of 17 percent sales tax on fertilisers, agricultural tractors, pesticides, plants, machinery and equipment.
The JI senators, while terming the move as anti-people decision, said that the masses were already in great trouble due to inflation, alleged corruption and unemployment, adding that the move would multiply the miseries of the farmers.
The senators in their motion, which has been submitted under clause 74 of the rules and procedures of the Senate of 1988, also criticised the increase of federal excise duty from one percent to 2.5 percent, two percent hike in power tariff and demanded the matter of public importance should be discussed in the next session of the Senate by suspending routine business of the House.
