Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Hina Rabbani Khar on Wednesday said Pakistan and Kyrgyzstan have the potential to benefit from the transit routes of Central Asia to boost their bilateral trade. Talking to APP, Ms Khar who is also the State Minister for Economic Affairs, said Pakistan offered a diverse market for the Central Asian countries and said Kyrgyzstan could get benefit of Pakistan's seaports for its trade.
She said in view of Kyrgyzstan's surplus power, Pakistan was considering working on the modalities of buying electricity from the Central Asian Republic. She mentioned the interest of the two countries in CASAREM - Central Asia-South Asia Regional Electricity Market.
The Kyrgyz Republic and Tajikistan in Central Asia, and Afghanistan and Pakistan in South Asia have been pursuing development of a regional electricity market. She urged the international donors to invest in power projects primarily in electricity generation and development of their transit facilities, to enable implementation of CASAREM.
She said during the visit of Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani to Kyrgyzstan, Pakistani delegation including businessmen evinced keen interest in mutual trade in various areas. Ms Khar said during the visit, Pakistan also sought Kyrgyzstan's support for full membership in the Shanghai Co-operation Organisation.
