Chairperson Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP), Farzana Raja has said that BISP was a practical manifestation of the dreams and wishes of Shaheed Benazir Bhutto and its serving the poor masses of the country without any consideration of caste, creed and religion.
She said that so far more than 4 million poor families have been provided financial assistance of approximately Rs 70 billion throughout Pakistan, adding that door to door poverty survey based on internationally recognised means test method is being conducted throughout the country and the number of registered deserving families with BISP would rise up to 5 to 7 million after the completion of Poverty Survey in June 2011.
She said this while addressing a press conference at Chief Minister House, says a press released received here on Monday. Besides others, Toqeer Fatima Bhutto, the Provincial Minister for Women's Development and Sassui Palejo, Provincial Minister for Culture were also present on the occasion. Farzana Raja said that the country at present was confronting two big challenges: terrorism and poverty. However, the democratic government is fighting with both of them with full zeal and vigor.
She elaborated further that besides providing monthly Cash Grant to beneficiary families, BISP, as a comprehensive social safety net, launched other initiatives ie Waseela-e-Haq, Waseela-e-Rozgar, Life Insurance and Mobile Phone Banking and is all set to introduce Health Insurance for its beneficiary families as well as nation-wide poverty survey to identify deserving families in a more effective and transparent manner.
Earlier, Farzana Raja gave a detailed briefing to the leaders and parliamentarians of Pakistan Peoples Party belong to Sindh regarding various steps of the BISP including on-going nationwide poverty survey. Besides others, Syed Qaim Ali Shah, Chief Minister Sindh, Pir Mazhar ul Haq, Provincial Minister for Education, Zulfiqar Mirza, Provincial Minister for Interior and Taj Haider, General Secretary PPP Sindh were also present on the occasion. The leaders of PPP Sindh appreciated the efforts of the BISP in regard with poverty alleviation and assured of their full co-operation for the success of nation-wide poverty survey.-PR
