A former employee of a New Jersey technology company has been arrested and charged with transporting restricted military data to China. Sixing Liu also is known as Steve Liu. He faces one count of exporting defence-related technical data without a license.
The US attorney's office says Liu was part of a research and development team that worked on navigation devices for the Department of Defence. Liu is accused of taking a laptop containing hundreds of documents relating to the projects on a trip to China in November and making a presentation at a technology conference there. Liu appeared in US District Court in Chicago on Tuesday. He was detained pending a March 14 bail hearing. He could face up to 20 years in prison and a $1 million fine if convicted.
