Christians of Multan on Sunday organised a big rally after services in St. Merry church, which concluded at Multan press club to condemn the assassination of Shahbaz Bhatti federal minister for minorities affairs. The rally was led by Chief of Pakistan Democratic Party Abid John, All Pakistan Minority Alliance's S. George, PML-N (Minority wing) President Joseph Numberdar, Boota Sarfraz, Christian female leaders Dr Gloria Almas, Begum Nasreen.
The participants were carrying placards and banners inscribed with slogans," Arrest the killers of Shahbaz," Down with terrorists, Down with Rehman Malik," Down with Rana Sanaullah. About 200 male and female Christians took part in the rally on the last day of the mourning being observed throughout Pakistan over the assassination of Bhatti. They held the interior minister Rehman Malik and provincial law minister responsible for the death of Shahbaz. The speakers were questioning why Bhatti was alone and not with his security guards when the gunmen surrounded his car that morning. Could this assassination have been prevented? Perhaps. If the security for Bhatti was beefed up, he would be alive now. Reportedly, Bhatti had ever discussed his concerns about lack of security with fellow minority lawmakers several times, they claimed. Later they dispersed peacefully.
