The Mozang Chungi incident, in which two Pakistanis were shot dead by an American, has become a great problem not only for Pakistan but also for the United States of America. Besides these two, another Pakistani whose name was Obaid-ur-Rehman was crushed to death by the driver who came to rescue this American, namely Raymond Davis.
To me, this issue looks like a mole in the mouth of a snake which it can neither swallow nor can it disgorge. Our rulers have the same position. If they free him, they are afraid that the people may stand up against them similar to the way that the Arab youths have stood up against their rulers. And, in case the court decides this case against their wishes, there is a possibility that USA may stop its aid on which our rulers thrive.
After all, the matter of Raymond Davis is not as simple as we view it. Even a layman knows very well that Pakistan is in debt from head to toe. Its past and present rulers have not left it in a position that Pakistan may raise its head before the Americans as ex-Foreign Minister is talking about. It is time we woke up to the seriousness of the matter and acted sensibly after taking all its pros and cons into account.
Further, it is regrettable to point out that Pakistan's problems are many and varied and it is also not in a position, both militarily and economically, to march on the path of antagonism with the US. It is also admitted that people's sentiments are very high in this regard. They say that Davis is the killer of many innocent Pakistanis and he must be punished.
There is no substitute for human life. When someone's blood relation is murdered without any fault of his/her, it is the foremost desire of a bereaved family that the killer must be punished.
Viewed in this background, I would like to know whether or not it is possible for the relatives/dependents of the murdered victims to try directly patch up with the Americans by taking advantage of the Qisas and Diyat system.
