Owners wants the government should complete modification of their long-standing idle fishing boats at Karachi fish harbour to fishing activities. They told Business Recorder on Wednesday the government had been holding their boats for modification since long but was not doing any renovation work due to the lack of funds.
Talking to Business Recorder, President Bona Fide Fishermen and Boat Owners Welfare Association, Asif Bhatti demanded the government either to return the queued up boats to their owners or rebuild them as per its modification plan. He said there were many owners who grounded their boats for the government's compulsory modification process which the EU had specified for Pakistan, but were lying idle for want of funds authorities.
He said boat modifiers were also not ready to resume modification work because they wanted funds for their already done job. Rehabilitation process in Sindh province after the catastrophic floods last year consumed funds allocated for boat modification and uplift of Karachi fish harbour, according to the fisheries department sources. The transfers of funds first worried the boat modifiers, which according to sources were over 30 and subsequently the owners whom had submitted their boats for structural improvement. Bhatti urged the government to release funds to the concerned department so that boat modification process could resume.
