All Pakistan Educational Conference is a research based organisation, which works for the betterment of education and educational system, said Secretary of All Pakistan Educational Conference, Syed Mujtaba Ali Barelvi, here on Thursday.
All Pakistan Educational Conference is a continuation of All India Educational Conference, which was founded by Sir Syed Ahmed Khan. But after the partition, the students and workers of freedom movement established All Pakistan Educational Conference here in Pakistan.
All Pakistan Educational Conference has collection of more than 25,000 books, especially books on Pakistan Movement. Original texts of movement are preserved and are still available. The conference even has almost all the original pamphlets printed for Pakistan Independence Movement. Barelvi established All Pakistan Educational Conference in 1951. Its first office was in Sindh Madarssatul Islam's room which after one year shifted to Nazimabad's office.
Sir Syed Ahmed Khan established Gulshan School at Muradabad in 1859, Victoria School at Ghazipur in 1863, and a scientific society in 1864. In 1867, he started the Muhammadan Anglo-Oriental School in Aligarh. Sir Syed got the opportunity to visit England in 1869-70. During his stay, he studied the British educational system and appreciated it.
Upon his return to India, he decided to make M A O High School on the pattern of British boarding schools. The school later became a college in 1875. The status of university was given to the college after the death of Sir Syed in 1920. M A O High School, College and University played a big role in creating awareness among the Muslims of South Asia.
Later, this organisation while following the footsteps of Sir Syed Ahmed Khan established Sir Syed College for Girls and ran it smoothly for many years. It has plans to establish one college for boys also and with the passage of time upgrade it to university level but in the decades of 80 the governing body of conference was forced to hand it over to the government.
The conference fought many literary fights with government over its decisions for amalgamation of history and geography in social studies. As a result of these fights, the government cancelled the grant. The Sindh government previously granted Rs 151,000 where as federal government granted Rs 100,000 per annum to the conference, which was stopped on the recommendations of Zubaida Jalal and Javed Qadri.
Now the center is running by its own resources as well as Mustafa Kamal, former City Nazim's, current City Administrator, Lala Fazlur Rehman and Governor Sindh Dr Ishrat-ul-Ibad's kind help. "I challenge that no other literary institute could have such exclusive material which conference has, it is a postgraduate level research center which helps students in their research work," Barelvi concluded.
