Some 6,221 cases of violence against women were reported in the country from January to August 2010 including 778 cases of murder, 302 cases of honour killing and 1,611 cases of sexual assault.
According to the data of Gender Crime Cell (GCC), Ministry of Women Development, 5,042 cases of violence were reported in Punjab, 618 in Sindh, 362 in Khyber Pakhtunkwa, 53 in federal capital, 49 in Azad Jammu and Kashmir, five in Gilgit Baltistan and 83 in Balochistan. However, the figure of violence received from Balochistan is up-to June only.
The data mentioned that among 778 cases of murder, 502 were reported in Punjab, 130 in Sindh, 121 in KP, 14 in Balochistan, five in federal capital, three each in GB and AJK. During the period, 623 cases of torture were also reported including 502 in Punjab, 58 in Sindh, 43 in KP, eight in Balochistan, eight in the federal capital and four in AJK.
During the aforementioned period, among 302 cases of honour killing, 159 were reported in Punjab, 102 in Sindh, 25 in KP, 15 in Balochistan and one in GB, whereas 24 cases of acid-throwing were reported including 13 in Punjab, one in Balochistan and 10 in federal capital. Only one case of stove-burning was reported in Punjab.
Some 1,611 cases of sexual assault were reported including 1,415 in Punjab, 130 in Sindh, 48 in KP, 11 in Balochistan, two in federal capital, four in AJK and one in GB, whereas four cases of 'vani' were reported; three in Punjab and one in KP.
The data revealed that 2,309 cases of minor cases of violence against women were also reported including 2,115 in Punjab, 61 in Sindh, 38 in KP, 26 in Balochistan, 28 in federal capital and 35 in AJK.
