KOLKATA: Virat Kohli scored his 50th international century as India frustrated Sri Lanka's hopes of a historic first Test win in India on Monday.

Chasing 231 for victory, Sri Lanka also lost two quick wickets before tea on the final day of the first Test in Kolkata.

Kohli slammed a 119-ball 104 before the hosts declared their second innings on 352-8 in the second session at Eden Gardens. Sri Lanka were 8-2 at tea after losing both openers. Lahiru Thirimanne, on 2, and Angelo Mathews, on 5, were batting with just a session to go.

Fast bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar struck in the first over of the innings after Sadeera Samarawickrama chopped the ball onto his stumps before he had scored.

Mohammed Shami got the left-handed Dimuth Karunaratne bowled for one as the visitors slipped to 2-2 in 3.3 overs.

Kohli raised India's hopes of a win, taking the attack to the opposition bowling which had looked menacing in the first session.

Fast bowler Suranga Lakmal and Dasun Shanaka took three wickets each to rattle the Indian batsmen who had resumed the day on 171-1.

Kohli stamped his class however, flaying the opposition attack towards the end of the innings, hitting 12 fours and two sixes.
