Pakistan needs to have a multi-dimensional foreign policy placing itself in the current context of a world order that imposes several challenges and demands on Pakistan as key a player, said Nawabzada Malik Amad Khan, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs here on Thursday.
Pakistan's national interests included promoting and ensuring national security, political stability and national integration, the state minister said while addressing a day long seminar on global transformations with the theme of "Contemporary Environment: Is a Neo-Cold War in the Making". The seminar was organised by the National Defence University (NDU) at its Institute of Strategic Studies Research and Analysis (ISSRA).
The minister delivered a keynote address to the seminar and highlighted the role of the NDU as a premier institution of learning and research in creating the necessary 'critical mass' for innovative thinking in policy formulation and its implementation in governance and provision of public services.
He said the government was fully aware of the challenges and opportunities that the transforming world order had created and accorded high priority to the promotion of peace and security. The seminar was organised in two sessions, the first session focused on emerging trends in the environment, and the second on challenges and opportunities likely to emerge in a post-unipolar world.
Dr Tahir Amin, Dr Nazir Hussain, Dr Aftab Kazi, Dr Maleeha Lodhi, Dr Ishtiaq Ahmad and Dr Shireen M. Mazari presented papers. NDU President, Lieutenant General Muhammad Hamid Khan in his welcome address said the day long deliberations would provide for a re-union of academia and practitioners for a scholastic review of the global transformations in the making and for identifying potential challenges and opportunities for Pakistan.
