US to assist flood affectees: Martin

Published Updated

sdfaaKARACHI: United States is providing much needed humanitarian aid to flood affectees and will continue to do so and stand with the people of Sindh in their rebuilding efforts.

This was stated by the US Consul General William Martin while talking to media at his residence here on Thursday in connection with Sindh Cultural Day celebrations.

He said "in the last flood (2010), USA had provided immediate humanitarian relief worth millions of dollars and now we are spending money trying to help people to recover from those floods. With floods in 2011, our efforts never seized and are working with our partners and many international and local NGOs including World Food Programme to help the people of Sindh", he added. However, he said that there is still lot to do and United States continues helping the people of Sindh.

"While we celebrate the great heritage of Sindh, we need to stop and remember the Sindhis who are suffering from the recent floods. I want to tell them that they are in our thoughts and prayers" he said while giving his message on Sindh Cultural Day.

William said that after visiting several areas in Sindh he has realised that there was no place in the world, richer in culture and history than Sindh.

"I have the privilege to serve here in Sindh which is a land of saints and poets. I want to thank all the people of Sindh for being so warm and welcoming and wish all the people of Sindh, peace and prosperity", he noted.

Responding to a question about the preservation of archaeological site of Moenjodaro, he said that this is the incredible and valuable historical site and huge fund is needed for this big task.

Martin said that he has brought up to the notice of concerned people in USA about Moenjodaro and we will be visiting this site again some and do something. Sindh is rich in culture and that culture needs to be protected, he added.

"United State is a very rich country in terms of many cultures of the world and USA and Sindh have opportunities to share their experiences and culture and their culture will be deeply appreciated in the United States", he observed.
