Exams in the month of Ramazan can take a toll on Muslim students. Considering this, American professors at the University of Washington are now letting Muslim pupils take the exams after sunset when they have completed their fast.

The initiative was first taken by Bryan White, a biology professor, who noticed that one of his students grades were dropping during the exams. The student explained to her professor that she had difficulty focusing on her exam while fasting.

Therefore, White decided to hold the finals in two sessions: one in the morning and one after the sun had gone down to accommodate his Muslim students.

”To me, this was a very simple thing. It's not uncommon for me to be at work until midnight anyway”, White explained, as quoted by The Independent.

But the students at the UW are praising White’s gesture, as it is far more significant than he may realize. They believe this could help Muslim pupil to fast easily during the exams.

Two more professors at the university are now offering after-sunset finals for their students.

As per the tradition, Muslims refrain from eating anything during their fast until after the sunset, which can make it difficult for brain to focus and concentrate.

Indira Ongarbaeva, said knowing she could eat before the final left her feeling more "emotionally prepared".

“This might not seem like a lot to Dr White, but it really means a lot to us. To see even something this small...it does make a big difference”, says Zoha Awan, another Muslim student.
