Former Chief Justice Lahore High Court Justice Sardar Muhammad Iqbal died here on Sunday. He was 86. He left two sons Sardar Shahid Iqbal and Sardar Qadir Iqbal, two daughters and a widow. His Namaz-e-Jinaza would be held at 9-Justice Sardar Iqbal Road (adjacent Zafar Ali Road) on Monday, May 05 at 08.00 am.
On hearing the news about the death of Justice Sardar Muhammad Iqbal, Chief Justice Lahore High Justice Sayed Zahid Hussain and a number of other serving as well as former judges of apex court reached his residence. Lahore High Court Principal Seat, its benches at Multan, Rawalpindi and Bahawalpur as well as all the civil and sessions courts throughout Punjab will remain closed on Monday, May 05.
He was an institution in himself and enjoyed equal grip over all fields of law. Many of his pupils from NWFP and Punjab had been elevated to higher judicial offices and other prominent posts.
He was elevated as Judge of High Court of West Pakistan in 1962 at the age of 40 and after ten years in 1972 became Chief Justice of the High Court. He also became Governor Punjab a number of times. After serving at High Court for 14 years, retired at the age of 54 in 1976.
He founded the institution of Federal Ombudsman in Pakistan and became its first Ombudsman. He associated with Punjab University, Engineering University Lahore, Bahauddin Zakriya University Multan in various capacities and also patronised Fatima Memorial Hospital Lahore, Gulab Devi Hospital, Salarwala Trust Hospital. He was born in 1922 in Poonch State of Jammu and Kashmir. He passed his LLB with distinction in 1944. He was elected continuously as Member Punjab Bar Council from 1958 to 1962.
He also patronised the Pakistan Law Journal in 1973 but avoided his own publicity. For the first time in the judicial history of the country, he allowed the lawyers to address the courts in national language ie Urdu as well. Justice Fazal Ghani Khan(Retd), Justice M A Ghani(Retd), Justice Khalil-ur-Rehman Khan(Retd), Justice Rafique Tarar(Retd), Justice Nasira Iqbal(Retd), S. M Zafar, Sh Muhammad Khursheed (late), Saeed Akhtar (late), Raja Muhammad Anwar and Dr Pervez Hassan are some of the legal luminaries benefiting from him.
