imagesaaBERLIN: German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle on Sunday welcomed Italy's adoption of economic reforms as important for Europe's stability and thanked outgoing Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi.

The measures, whose backing by parliament were followed by Berlusconi's resignation Saturday, are an "important contribution to the current stabilizing in Europe", Westerwelle said.

Through them, Italy is making it "clear that we must develop further in the direction of stability", he added speaking on the sidelines of his Free Democrats' (FDP) party congress in Frankfurt.

He also expressed his "thanks" to Berlusconi, under whom, he said, Germany and Italy had worked well together which "for everyone is also seen controversially". And he said he hoped the close partnership with Germany would continue under the new Italian government.

Westerwelle's pro-business FDP party is the junior partner in Chancellor Angela Merkel's ruling coalition government.
