FBR to establish data banks in Karachi, Islamabad

Published Updated

ISLAMABAD: The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) will establish two data banks in the Federal Capital and Karachi containing details of taxpayers, which will help improve the tax collection system.

Member Inland Revenue of FBR, Khawar Khursheed Butt said this while briefing newsmen about the measures taken for restructuring of the tax system.

He said that integration of inland revenue services had been completed.

He further said that the committee which was formed to complete the automation process, had also completed its report, which would expose the main hurdles in the revenue collection.

Khawar Khursheed said that so far about Rs. 6 billion had been spent on tax reform process. "Automation is a complex process and it is taking more time than expected. However, once the process is completed it will help collect additional taxes".

He said that weaknesses in the tax collection system would be removed and the officers with good repute would be posted on important posts.

"The country is facing fiscal challenges and the FBR will try to meet them by maximizing the revenues", he said.

To a question, he said that the government was cutting its expenditures but it was not possible to minimize them on a large scale in view of last year floods and ongoing war on terror.

To overcome the fiscal gape, it is vital to enhance the revenue collection by broadening the tax base and improving the existing system, he said adding that pilot projects would be initiated in this regard in some cities. Replying to a question he said that measures would be taken to resolve all the cases related to the FBR , which had been stuck up in different courts.

"We appeal to all the chief justices of high courts to resolve the pending cases, which also involve a large amount of revenues", he added.
