Presiding judge of the 13-member Full Supreme Court bench Justice Khalilur Rehman Ramday has said the court will give a short but comprehensive judgement which will cover all aspects of accountability and independence of the judiciary.
He made this observation during hearing of petition of Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry who is facing President's reference on the charges of misconduct and misuse of authority. Counsel for the federation Malik Mohammad Qayyum continued elaboration of his 18 points formulation on Thursday and was on his legs when the hearing was adjourned till Monday.
He emphasised that putting in place an effective machinery for accountability of members of the superior judiciary is necessary to ensure its independence, prestige and to command public faith and confidence. He said a reference to the Supreme Judicial Council is the best method for accountability of judges of the superior courts as it provides for enquiry by peers and not by the executive, which should be allowed to proceed unhindered.
He said that the material against the Chief Justice has already been placed before the SJC which, may be summoned by the Court for examination or can be produced by the government if so allowed or directed.
The 13-member full court headed by Justice Khalilur Rehman Ramday includes Justice Mohammad Nawaz Abbasi, Justice Faqir Mohammad Khokhar, Justice Mian Shakirullah Jan, Justice M. Javed Buttar, Justice Tassaduq Hussain Jillani, Justice Sayed Saeed Asshad, Justice Nasirul Malik, Justice Raja Fayyaz Ahmad, Justice Chaudhry Ejaz Ahmad, Justice Sayed Jamshed Ali and two ad hoc judges, Justice Hamid Ali Mirza and Justice Ghulam Rabbani.
