Higher Education Commission's (HEC) Executive Director Dr Sohail H Naqvi has said that the HEC facilitates institutions of higher learning to serve as an engine of socio-economic development in the country.
He stated this addressing the faculty of the University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (UVAS) Lahore during his visit to the city campus of the UVAS here on Monday. Dr Naqvi maintained that the HEC has focused on faculty development and improvement in quality of higher education and research in the country.
He said that the HEC wanted the universities to produce entrepreneurs and focused on research, increasing the number of research articles by the faculty published in the impact factor international research journals. He lauded the developments and the progress the UVAS has made in the last five years.
The HEC executive director separately addressed the M Phil and Ph D scholars of the UVAS and told them about the facilities the HEC provides to Ph D and M Phil students. He urged them to get maximum benefits from HEC facilities and apply for scholarships and research grants.
Earlier, vice-chancellor, Professor Dr Muhammad Nawaz briefed the HEC executive director on the academic, research and developmental activities of the UVAS. He said that the university was initiating new graduate programs in dairy technology, fisheries, aqua-culture, poultry, microbiology and bio-informatics and MBA in life sciences. He said that the UVAS had already been offering M Phil and PhD in 11 disciplines and was planning to offer these higher degree programs in other disciplines.
On the occasion vice chancellor said that the UVAS also has started a teacher orientation program for training of the teachers in research techniques and communication and IT skills. He said that the UVAS has developed linkages with national and international institutions and industry for improvement in quality of education and research for overall development of the livestock sector.
