The City District Government Rawalpindi (CDGR) has launched the road construction and renovation projects of Rs 1.631 billion in different parts of Rawalpindi besides, work started on Rs 16 billion Nullah Lai Expressway, said City Nazim Raja Javed Ikhlas here on Sunday.
"Reconstruction and expansion of these major roads of the city would help end traffic problems and provide better facility to motorists and common man", he said while talking to media persons.
He said the work is in progress on expansion project of Airport Road, Pindi Cricket Stadium Road (double road) and main roads of Block-A and Block-D of Satellite Town and after completion of all these projects, the smooth sailing of traffic within the city would be made possible.
Raja Javed Ikhlas said the widening of Airport Road from Katchery Chowk to Flying Club was in progress and the Frontier Works Organisation (FWO) was carrying the project costing Rs 1.2 billion. The funds for the project were provided by the federal government, he added.
He said the work on Rs 16 billion Nullah Lai Expressway on both sides of the Nullah Lai from Ammar Chowk to Katarian Bridge situated on I.J. Principal Road has been kicked off. The project was contracted to the FWO and the PC-I of the project has been completed by the FWO with the technical assistance of Nespak.
Ikhlas said that Rs 40.5 million would be spent on repair of three-km strip of double road while revamping of roads, including Sixth Road in Satellite Town would cost Rs 60.5 million.
He said some more projects like Elevated Highway on Murree Road, Rawalpindi Ring Road (Bypass) and remodelling of Bund Khanna Road, Rawal Road and Link Road would be carried out by the government within next two or three years.
The Nazim said the repair of roads, streets and sub-lanes was in progress in the entire district with the total cost of Rs 60 million in which patchwork along with construction of drainage and footpaths on the roadsides would be completed.
He said the renovation of 80-km roads and 20-km footpaths was near completion with the cost of Rs 220 million.
Ikhlas said that in the budget recently passed by the District Assembly, Rs 110 million has been earmarked for construction and maintenance of rural roads. On the other hand, almost 100-km countryside roads have been completed in the district.
