Thousands of people mostly Sialkot's workforce on Friday were completely stranded along the banks of River Tavi, near Sialkot, as private and official boatmen did not operate due to the fury of rising water. Small dingy-boats are the only mode of communication between Sialkot and scores of villages and hamlets from where major workforce for Sialkot industry commute.
Scores of villages along River Tavi were cut off after the small wooden belly-bridge over River Tavi near Saidpur Pattan collapsed about eleven days ago. The bridge is the only communication that links Bajwat villages and the rest of the district. The flow of River Tavi was so furious and dangerous that both official and private boatmen kept their boats away.
The affected villagers also were unable to reach their workplaces in Sialkot that they do after crossing River Tavi. Bajwat area's all the 85 far off bordering villages along the boundary remained cut off from the rest of the district.
The current fresh spell of pre-monsoon rains has raised the water level in Rivers Chenab, Tavi and Tavi Munawar and in all the seasonal canals including Aik, Dek, Palkhu, Bhed, Baeen and Bassanter was continuously rising.
Heavy rains in both Sialkot and Narowal districts and in all the catchment areas of neighbouring Occupied Jammu & Kashmir continue. DCO Captain Atta Muhammad Khan (Rtd).told the newsmen that the repairing of the swept-away wooden belly bridge could only start after the rainy season. DCO said that the situation is under observation and under control.
