Around 50 industrial units are still closed in North Karachi Industrial Area as Karachi Electric Supply Corporation (KESC) has failed to fully restore power in the area even after eight days. Industrialists of the area said that out of 2,500 units that were gone out of production on June 21 due to power failure after thunderstorm, which uprooted a large number of electric poles and snapped electric wires in the area.
They said the North Karachi Association of Trade and Industry (NKATI) was continuously pursuing the KESC to fully restore power supply to the area.
NKTI pattern-in-chief Captain A. Moiz Khan said power supply to 90 percent area was restored after hectic pursuance and pressure, but 10 percent area was still without power ever after eight days of thunderstorm and heavy rains. He said majority of industries in the area were export-oriented and continuous failure of power for several days had made it impossible for the exporters to honour their export commitments on time.
In other industrial areas, like Site and Korangi, Federal "B" Area, Landhi, industrial activities have not yet been fully restored. Industrialists in Korangi industrial area said that power supply had been restored, but they were still facing voltage and frequent power failure problem.
They said that textile-processing units were facing big problems to maintain pace of production. They pointed out that textile processing was a very technical process and if power supply disrupted during the processing, the entire lot of cloth passing through the process would be damaged.
