Protest against knighthood award to writer Salman Rushdie continued Friday on the 12th day in Multan. Two demonstrations were organised by the Jamiat Talaba-e-Islam, (JTI), JUP and an effigy of Rushdie was burnt in the city.
While a protest meeting was organised by the (JUI-F) Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (Fazal-ur-Rehman)." We condemn the United Kingdom for awarding knighthood title to a blasphemer as they had hurt our sentiments," Khurshid Abbas Gardezi said. More than 100 students of religious seminary and local clerics staged a demonstration in front of Eidgah under the auspices of Jamiat Talaba-e-Islam and led by students leaders and clerics, Sahibzada Ahmed Mian, Muhammad Ayyub Mughal and Arshad Iqbal Niazi.
They chanted slogans against the British government and said "Britain should prepare themselves for expected reaction from the Muslims and they should not be surprised by the violent reaction in the Muslim world to the knighthood awarded to writer Salman Rushdie," clerics said. They also burnt the flag of UK and an effigy of Rushdie.
