Recently a memorial meeting was held to mourn the passing away of an old friend, Common Sense, from our moderately enlightened environment, who left after keeping us and our forefathers company for umpteen years.
No one knows for sure how old he was, since his birth records were long ago obliterated due bureaucratic red tape. He was remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as: Knowing when to come in out of the foul weather; Health is more important than wealth; Life isn't always fair; Maybe I am not perfect; Maybe it was my fault.
Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies and not by fudging figures. Reliable strategies were put in place putting honest responsible persons to implement them without fear or favour. His health began to deteriorate rapidly when self-serving and overbearing regulations were forced into play.
When might started trampling rights; when personal fiefdoms were established to lord it over all; When the poor and have- nots were exploited; and Dissent of any sort was not tolerated; only worsened his condition.
Common Sense got worse when people attacked people for doing the job that they themselves had failed to do in disciplining themselves. He declined even further when tolerance and temperance were thrown out of the window; When honesty became a figment of imagination.
Common Sense took a beating as the laws of the land started being applied selectively; politics became business; and criminals received better treatment than their victims.
Common Sense lost the will to live when you couldn't defend yourself from an intruder in your own home; when you had to beg and cajole the local than a to lodge a report.
Due to the demise of his family, Common Sense had no will to live. His family included; Truth, Trust, Responsibility and Reason and he saw no sense in prolonging his own agony living in their absence. He is survived by his 3 stepbrothers; I, Me & Myself. Not many attended his memorial meeting because so few realised he was gone.
