Minister for Information and Broadcasting Senator Muhammad Ali Durrani has said the suggestions for extending voter registration deadline are being considered by the concerned quarters.
Talking to a private television channel on Wednesday night the Minister said decision in this regard would however, come from the Election Commission of Pakistan.
He said missing of substantial number of eligible voters from the draft voters list is not the issue of opposition alone but the ruling coalition parties also have reservations. The government wants to take all stakeholders on board and a process of consultation with political parties has already been initiated by the Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz, he said.
He expressed the hope that after completion of consultation process in next few days a joint government-opposition strategy would be evolved to address the issue.
He said ECP had also allowed old identity cards for entry of votes on the draft electoral lists. Durrani said it is also being examined as to what extent the old voters list can be utilised to accommodate maximum number of eligible voters in the new lists. However, the opinion of ECP would prevail in this regard, he added.
The minister said the point of view of ECP is being made public through official media. The government is making serious efforts to end all types of controversy by involving all the stakeholders, he said.
