Correction of electoral lists: PPP and PML-N file petitions in Supreme Court
Pakistan People's Party and Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) have filed petitions in the Supreme Court for correction of the draft electoral lists in which about 30 million voters have been left out.
Senator Abdul Latif Khosa of PPP and Zafarullah Khan of PML (N) filed petitions in the Branch Registry, Lahore, and Principal Registry, Islamabad, respectively. Zafarullah has made Election Commission of Pakistan respondent, which issued the draft electoral rolls/lists containing names of about 51 million male/female registered voters on June 12 2007 against the list of over 70 million registered voters which was prepared for 2002 general elections.
The petitioner alleged that the capricious and mala fide act of the respondent (ECP) had marred the democratic ideals of 160 million Pakistanis who "are shocked" to know that 30 million voters have not been registered to cast their vote in the next general elections. He alleged that this may be the result of a grand design of stealing the forthcoming elections with the connivance of an Establishment which is bent upon disenfranchisement of the people of Pakistan since Maulvi Tameezuddin Khan case.
He prayed the court to direct the Election Commission to update the draft electoral roles/lists and ensure that no eligible voter is omitted from the list.
