Japan's Agriculture Ministry bought a total of 48,500 tonnes of wheat from the United States and Canada, and 1,500 tonnes of Canadian six-row food barley at a weekly tender, a ministry official said on Thursday.
Shipment for US wheat is scheduled to take place between July 26 to August 25. Shipments for Canadian wheat and barley will take place in August. The purchased amount fell short of a tender plan for a total of 93,500 tonnes that the ministry had announced.
The official said the ministry cancelled two cargoes due to high prices and an additional wheat tender would be held on June 27, with details such as amounts, types and origins to be announced on Friday. "It will be an irregular one as our basic plan this fiscal year is to hold three tenders a month," she said. "Wheat prices have gone up to high levels since the start of this month, so we're increasing the number of tenders while reducing the amount each time to diversify price risks," she said.
