Minister for Information and Broadcasting Muhammad Ali Durrani said million of rupees are being squandered on holding APC on foreign soil and that too at a time when the whole Muslim world is in shock by Britain's award of knighthood to Salman Rushdie.
"It's a shame that country's issues are being discussed in a foreign country," he told PTV. Lashing out at MMA, he said that the religious conglomerate used to blame the West for all ills of the country, but now they are going there for discussing domestic issues.
Expressing resentment on Benazir's statement that she and Nawaz Sharif would be prime minister alternatively, he said this is an insult to the people as it is their right to decide who should be in power.
Inviting the opposition for dialogue on a code of conduct for general elections, he said confrontation would lead nowhere. He pointed out that Opposition's agitation calls against the government already failed badly and such attempts in future would also meet the same fate.
Dialogue offer is not a sign of weakness of the government, rather it is a symbol of democratic culture introduced by President Pervez Musharraf, he said. He said the government has been advocating dialogue but the opposition wasted a whole year on thumping desks.
He said Pakistan Muslim League is ready to face the challenge of elections. Free and fair elections are the need of the government instead of the opposition, he added. PML and coalition parties will win the elections and present the next budget, he said, adding that in the past people used to feel tense on the advent of budget but now they feel relaxed.
The budget for fiscal 2007-08 reflects seven-year performance of the government which has ensured a bright economic future for the country, he said. He said his ministry is not being changed but added that it is prerogative of the PM to assign portfolios. Regarding tenure of assemblies, he said the constitution will be followed in letter and spirit.
