Most of the local tanners have alleged that the political heavy weights have politicised the project of tanneries zone for their personal gains. The project of establishing an international standard tannery zone near Sialkot still remains in doldrums, as the Federal, provincial and district governments still remain unable to select any suitable land for its establishment despite the passage of the five years.
The project of tanneries zone had been envisaged in 2002 and the Punjab government had released a special grant of Rs 90 million for acquiring the 300 acres of land for this project. Five years have passed, but the suitable land has not yet been selected by the government due to some unknown reasons.
The tanners urged President General Pervez Musharraf to look into the matter and ensure early removal of the political hurdles from the smooth way of establishing tanneries zone at Sialkot.
