Presently there is no gap between demand and supply of power in the country due to increase in the hydel and thermal power generation. This was observed in a meeting held here on Wednesday to review the power situation with Federal Minister for Water and Power, Liaquat Ali Jatoi in the chair.
Member Power Wapda and other senior officials of the Ministry and Wapda attended the meeting. The meeting noted that the hydel generation has increased from 5,000 MW to 5,600 MW and Thermal from 2,600 to 2,800 MW. There was surplus capability of power generation during the last two days and today there is negligible shortfall of 163 MW. Load management in some parts of the country under Wapda system is carried only due to distribution problems.
While reviewing the power situation in Karachi it was informed that Wapda is providing up to 800 MW power to KESC in peak hours against 600 MW. There is no load shedding in Karachi due to generation as its 180 MW Bin Qasim plant is online since Tuesday. The load shedding in Karachi is only due to the problems in the distribution system, repairs and overloading.
It was observed that the situation is likely to improve further in coming week due to expected increase in hydel generation and effective measures being taken to make the plants operational round the clock to generate maximum power to facilitate the people.
Jatoi stressed the need for continuous vigil on thermal plants by ensuring adequate fuel supply and preventive maintenance measures. He said the power situation in Karachi is also being monitored strictly by the Ministry and hoped that its other unit will soon be operational which is under repair.
The Minister urged the consumers to implement the conservation policy in the national interest to save electricity to meet the demand of all segments of society.-PR
