The NWFP Assembly Tuesday passed a unanimous resolution demanding of the federal government to cut off diplomatic relations with the United Kingdom to protest conferring knighthood on Salman Rushdie. The resolution also urged the government to call the British High Commissioner to Foreign Office to lodge protest.
Six Women MPAs of the treasury benches including Shagufta Naz, Zubaida Khatoon, Sabira Shakir, Nargis Zain, Aftab Shabir and Fouzia Farrukh jointly moved the unanimously passed resolution. The house condemned the awarding of Award of Sir to Salman Rushdie and termed it a part of the campaign launched against the Muslims by Europe and the United States to hurt their feelings in the name of crusade.
The resolution further stated that the decision reflects the continuation of acts of publication of blasphemous caricatures, the notorious book of Satanic Verses by Salman Rushdi, desecration of holy Qur'aan in Guantanamo and banning Muslim women to wear veil.
The resolution demanded of the federal government to cut off diplomatic relations with Britain and call the High Commissioner to inform him of the concern and anger of the people of Pakistan. The resolution further called for putting pressure on the United Kingdom to withdraw the title awarded to Salman Rushdie.
Speaker Bakht Jehan Khan, who was chairing the house, put the resolution to vote and the house adopted it unanimously. Earlier, Maulana Amanat Shah, Muzaffar Said, Maulana Idress, Gur Suran Lal, Zubaida Khatoon and Naeema Kishwar of MMA on a point of order brought the matter in the notice of the house.
