Majority of centres displaying computerised voter-lists were seen wearing desert look, with each display centre attracts 15 to 25 visitors during the past seven days in the city, according to a survey carried out by this correspondent.
The display centres have so far received 7 to 10 complaints from voters and only 12 to 17 registration forms have been submitted since the centres were opened. While more than 70,000 voters left unregistered in Multan district.
People, as well as staff of the display centres, have cited the rising inflation that has hit the middle class quite hard as the main reason behind people's disinterest in the electoral process. Another reason behind the people's disinterest could be the ill-planned placement of display centres in union councils.
"For the last six days, we have been referring voters from one centre to the other, as most display centres have been set up in the irrelevant schools of the union councils, and people are wandering from one display centre to the other in the sizzling heat," centre's staffer said.
"We do not need elections and governments, which always gift us the price-hike," said Shaikh Niaz Muhammad of Hassan Parwana in Multan, when asked why he was reluctant to check his family members' names in the voter lists.
"We are trying to motivate people for the Election Commission of Pakistan's (ECP) programme. But out of thousands voters, only 3 to 4 are visiting the display centres every day," an in-charge of a display centre said.
He said that despite distribution of pamphlets in each and every house and making announcements through loudspeakers, people were seen reluctant to visit the centres. "Out of 1,100 voters, only 13 checked their names and five had lodged their complaints in the centre, while only six people got new entry registration forms during the last seven days." He said that out of 3,116 voters' only 15 voters checked the electoral lists for correction to date.
