Practical measures are being taken by the present government for promotion of higher education, and new universities and colleges are being set up in various cities of the province besides up-gradation of existing educational institutions.
This was stated by Punjab Communication and Works Minister Chaudhry Zaheer-ud-Din Khan, while presiding over a high level meeting to review the pace of construction work on buildings of educational institutions here on Tuesday.
The meeting was informed that a new university is being established in Gujrat, which would cost Rs 765.8 million and this project would be completed in new fiscal year. Similarly, a sum of Rs 64.9 million would be spent for setting up of laboratories, class rooms and provision of other facilities to 'Rachna College of Engineering and Technology' Gujranwala.
The meeting was further informed that a Home Economics College for girls would be constructed in Gujranwala, which will cost Rs 85 million and this project would be completed in 2008. During the year 2006-07 Rs 22.2 million had been spent on this project while an amount of Rs 40 million has been allocated in the current fiscal year. The meeting also reviewed the pace of preservation of Quaid-i-Azam Library, which would cost Rs 89 million.
Chaudhry Zaheer-ud-Din Khan directed the officers of C&W department to accelerate the pace of construction work on all on-going projects so that they could be completed in the stipulated period. The meeting was attended by Communications and Works Secretary Muhammad Ahsan, Additional Secretary Technical, Masood-ur-Rasool, Chief Engineer Works, Deputy Secretary Buildings and officers of the education department.
