Another advert proudly proclaims another harbinger of 21st century progress. Another sky scraper to add to the urban landscape, which will herald our entry into club of modem cities such as New York etc. Little do we realise that these high rises, will not only wreck the city's infrastructure, but have manifold implications for the climate.
Firstly the infrastructure, water, traffic electricity is unable to take the load of another twenty storied dwelling, be it of shops or apartments, in an already congested locality. Most of these places where high rises are coming up are in such already tightly packed areas, Tariq Road, Clifton Road and near the Gulf.
With more buildings, cars people in an already suffocatingly, polluted and closed space, think of how far the sky high levels of pollution will be magnified. These high rises will block the breeze from entering the claustrophobic space to clear the stale air, heavy with dust, smoke and other pollutants. Rumour has it that they are building another Dubai like city along the seashore.
But if they again block the sea line with high building not only would it be depriving the citizens of the natural breathing space and views of the ocean, but the buildings would again prevent the famous Karachi breeze from sweeping in and bringing in the refreshing change of air and, lowering of temperatures.
The effects of high rises are already apparent, in the increasing temperatures and lack of breeze. Encircled by high rises, we would be living in swamp like conditions of damp, still, stagnant air with no relief. Not something to look forward to for ourselves or our children.
