Chairman Senate, Mohammedmian Soomro has said that Pakistan wants to develop special relationship with Malta. He made this observation while talking to Dr Michael Frendo, Maltese Foreign Minister, who called on him at his residence here on Friday.
Soomro said that Pakistan was keen to further strengthen its relations with Malta and there existed vast scope for greater collaboration in various sectors like economy, trade, education and tourism. The Senate chairman underlined the need for greater interaction among the Parliamentarians, businessmen, students and intellectuals and remarked that it would definitely pave the way for giving a boost to the cordial relationship.
He apprised the Maltese Foreign Minister about the composition, role, working and performance of the Senate and said that the women parliamentarians have not only been playing a very significant role in the Parliament, they have been making a positive contribution in the socio-economic development of the country. The Maltese Foreign Minister lauded Pakistan's role in international affairs and observed that the two countries have a lot of commonalties.
He was of the view that Pakistan and Malta were enjoying good relations and there was a keen desire to further deepen these relations in fields like economics, trade and Parliamentary cooperation. The Maltese Foreign Minister informed the Senate chairman that there were 65 members in the Maltese legislature and the role of the Senate there was to review the performance of government departments and its machinery.
He said that the proportional representation system was fully operative and working very smoothly in Malta. Later, the Senate Chairman, Mohammedmian Soomro hosted a lunch in honour of the visiting Foreign Minister, which was attended by Parliamentarians, diplomats and leading businessmen.
