The City Council on Thursday unanimously adopted resolutions demanding Punjab-like rulings to abolish the interest-based private transactions in Sindh and curb on sale of Iranian oil amid opposition walkout from the session.
Other resolutions passed were on the sale of smuggled Iranian oil, code of conduct for slaughtering and the green house emissions from the local industries at Kotri polluting the potable water supplied to Karachi.
The Council with Senior Presiding Officer Masood Mehmood in the chair also approved the merger of the storage department of the defunct Karachi Municipal Corporation and the Karachi Development Authority.
The Opposition Leader in City Council, Sayed Ghani, soon after start of the session, on point of order demanded the convenor to present the resolution condemning the assassination of the leader of Islami Jamiat Tulba (students) Wasif Aziz in the Council.
The opposition boycotted the session after the non-compliance of Wasif Aziz's murder and chanted slogans against the government outside the Council. The session proceeding, however, continued and the treasury members presented a resolution against the interest-based transactions in the province demanding severe punishments for those convicted.
Salman Mujahid Baloch, from treasury benches, accused the MMA (Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal) group leader in Provincial Assembly, Momin Umer Sadique of being directly involved in the interest-based matters and said this was the very reason behind opposition's walkout from the session.
The Council unanimously passed a resolution demanding a strict curb on the salel of oil smuggled from Iran besides adopting resolutions on checking the pollution of potable water at Kotri, proper code of conduct for the slaughtering process and merger of the storage department of KMC and KDA. The convenor adjourned the session till June 16, 2007.
