The Pakistan Tobacco Company (PTC) launched its second 'Social Report' at its Akora Khattak Factory. The briefing was attended by stakeholders including tobacco growers, tobacco dealers and distributors and media representatives.
PTC's Social Report 2006/07 was the result of structured dialogues with key stakeholders all over the country. It enabled the company to focus on key issues, elicit expectations, respond and express their commitment to align its business with reasonable stakeholder expectations.
Emphasising the importance of a dialogue with key stakeholders, the company's CEO, William Toh, said, "The society's expectations of us as a corporate citizen are many, and our obligation is to meet them whenever and wherever possible."
The Social Report 2006/07 responds to each concern raised by stakeholders during the dialogue sessions. It highlights the positions of the company on Responsible Marketing, Youth Smoking Prevention, Consumer Information and Public Place Smoking, along with a host of other issues. It also contains details of key Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives of the company.
The report highlighted the company's contribution through relief and rehabilitation initiatives after the October 2005 earthquake. The ongoing projects such as water filtration plants, country's largest afforestation program, eye clinic with LRBT and many other initiatives were also touched upon.
Ali Naseer, Director, Corporate Affairs, giving a presentation, detailed the different CSR projects of PTC. "We run mobile doctor units that provide health services to 3,000 patients every month, apart from sponsoring nine non-formal schools in NWFP and numerous IT learning resource centres."
The report launch was widely appreciated by the stakeholders which showed their confidence in the company's CSR initiatives. The PTC was the first multinational in Pakistan to release an internationally certified Social Report in 2004/05, which was audited as per AA 1000 AS Standard.
This report set a precedent and was also given the Best Sustainability Report Award at the 5th ACCA-WWF Environmental Reporting Awards held in Islamabad during April, 2007.-PR
