NEW YORK: US stocks dived Tuesday after Greece unexpectedly called a referendum on its EU bailout program and Chinese manufacturing data signaled a global economic slowdown.
The blue-chip Dow Jones Industrial Average tumbled 253.61 points (2.12 percent) to 11,701.40 in the first two minutes of trade.
The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite, which had opened more than three percent lower, was down 78.87 points (2.94 percent) to 2,605.54, while the S&P 500-stock index, a broader measure of the markets, shed 28.22 points (2.25 percent) to 1,225.08.
