Elevation to SC Judicial Commission recommends four judges

ISLAMABAD: The Judicial Commission on Appointment of superior courts' judges on Thursday recommended four names for elevation to the Supreme Court to the parliamentary committee for approval.

The judges, whose names have been recommended for elevation to the apex court included Chief Justice Lahore High Court (LHC) Justice Ejaz Ahmed Chaudhry, Chief Justice Peshawar High Court, Justice Ejaz Afzal and senior most judge of Sindh High Court (SHC) Justice Syed Gulzar Ahmed and a former SHC judge Athar Saeed.

Sources told Business Recorder that the Commission also recommended three names for appointment to Islamabad High Court including Session Judge from FATA Azeem Afridi, Advocate M. Qureshi from Sindh and Lahore High Court Bar Association Rawalpindi President Shaukat Siddique from Punjab.

After elevation of LHC and PHC chief justices to the apex court, the post of the respective High Courts' top adjudicator were going to fall vacant, hence the Commission recommended the name of senior most judge, Justice Shaikh Azmat Saeed for LHC Chief Justice and Justice Dost Muhammad Khosa of PHC for appointment as top adjudicator of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The recommendations of the Commission would be sent to the Parliamentary Committee on Judges Appointment, which will approve or reject the names after deliberations.

The meeting of the commission was headed by the Chief Justice of Pakistan which has four senior most judges of the SC as members, a former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Federal Law Minister, Attorney General for Pakistan, and a senior Supreme Court lawyer named by the Pakistan Bar Council.

It is worth mentioning that after approval of the recommended names by the Parliamentary Committee, there SC would have it sanctioned strength of 17 judges.
