streetHYDERABAD: Superintendent Traffic Police Shahnawaz Memon has urged the business community to help the police smoothen the movement of traffic in the city.

"Wrong parking, occupation of footpaths, putting signboards and other things for display on roads obstructs the flow of traffic leading to jams," he said while meeting the businessmen at Hyderabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (HCCI) here on Monday.

The SP said he had urged Taluka municipal administrations to help the police ease flow of traffic by removing encroachments from the roads. "The city has the roads long and wide enough for the number of vehicles which commute daily but the need is to ensure that the roads are not allowed to be occupied for other purposes," he noted.

Memon said the department would soon direct the shopkeepers to remove encroachments from the roads failing which they would be booked. Earlier, Chairman HCCI's sub-committee on traffic Moiz Abbas asked the police to put in place a better traffic management system in Cantonment and Saddar areas.

Abbass said contractors collect charges for parking of vehicles and motorbikes outside the shopping centres in Saddar area which causes traffic congestion. "This does not only affect the travellers but also the shopkeepers whose shops are blocked by the wrong parking," he added.

He pointed out that Chandni Shopping Centre where motorbikes were parked was causing problem to the shops.

The business community agreed with the police for mutual action to improve the city's traffic system. Businessmen and traders representing different shopkeepers' association also attended the meeting.
