Holding Senate elections, a constitutional command

Published Updated

babarISLAMABAD: Former federal minister for Law and Justice and PPP Senator Dr Babar Awan has said that holding of election to Senate seats is a constitutional command which cannot be linked to a particular political demand.

Talking to mediapersons here in the Supreme Court on Monday, he said that the election to Senate seats would be held in accordance with constitutional obligation as ordained in Article 50 of the constitution.

He said Senate elections would be held in time and it would not be postponed if a provincial assembly was dissolved.

Dr Babar said that proposal to dissolve Punjab assembly was raised by those Sharif brothers who had in the past promoted former president Parvez Musharraf out of turn as Chief of Army Staff.

"PML-N is not a political party but a bunch of corporate businessmen. About 12 leaders in the party are eyeing Prime Minister's slot and four among them belonged to Sharif family alone," he added.

He informed that if a provincial assembly was dissolved, in accordance with Constitution, elections would be held within sixty days.

He said that people on the streets loved to raise slogans 'go Sharif go' showing their strong rejection of self-centered politics.
